Subtractive synthesis

Subtractive synthesis starts with a harmonically rich waveform and removes or reduces parts of its spectrum with filters.

An analog subtractive patch often sends a bright oscillator through a low-pass filter controlled by an envelope. A wavetable oscillator can supply the source waveform in the same setup. Filtering changes only the frequencies present in that source.
