Korg DW-8000

The Korg DW-8000 (1985) is a hybrid synthesizer whose Digital Waveform Generator System (DWGS) offered 16 stored digital waveforms in front of an analog filter — digital waves without wavetable scanning.

Each oscillator picks one fixed DWGS waveform — saw, piano-like, bell-like, and so on, doubling the DW-6000's eight — and the tone is then shaped subtractively through analog circuitry. It is a useful boundary marker for the vocabulary: DWGS stores single-cycle waves, but with no stack of frames and no position to scan, it is a digital-waveform synth rather than a wavetable synth.
