Through-zero FM

Through-zero FM is frequency modulation in which the carrier's frequency is allowed to pass through zero and come out negative, continuing the phase in reverse rather than stopping.

The carrier's phase reverses direction when its instantaneous frequency passes through zero. This can produce a symmetrical response around the zero crossing. Simple carrier waveforms such as sines produce fewer sidebands than harmonically rich carriers.
